So you want an island who doesn’t want an island I want an island but we talk about kitchen islands So what are the questions you should ask yourself before designing an island? Do you have the space for an island are you gonna sit at the islands is the island more for prep or storage? These are the questions that you should ask yourself and let’s go through them one by one So the first question a very important question at that, do you have the room for an island? Do you have at least 13 to? 15 feet of width in your kitchen to have the proper clearances around the island. Can you stand in front of your refrigerator? Open the doors and not hit the islands Remember the refrigerators a very high traffic area and if you have an island in the way, you’re gonna regret it can you open your stove and not hit the Door on the island or stand in front of the stove. So you can load food in without hitting the island Those are important questions when we talk about Clearances around an island not every kitchen has the depth for an island So I always recommend that you tape it up on the floor Walk around it live around it before you actually commit to it so number 2 Overhang, what does that even mean? What does it mean when we say overhang what that means is what you see here the stone Overhangs the cabinetry creating the space for which you will sit and you have to ask yourself in your islands How are you using your overhang? Are you using your island more like a kitchen table or more for entertaining? So if your overhang goes straight across which is this way Do you want your guests sitting like soldiers in a straight line or do you want to have overhang on the side in the back? Creating a space where you can sit around the island more like a table three Storage solutions for your Islands obviously in the front of the island you’re gonna have cabinetry but in the back because they’re an opportunity To have more storage and what is that storage mean if you’re going to have an over so if you’re going to have an overhang? Drawers are a no-no You can’t open drawers and access what’s inside of them if you have your stone overhanging So you’re gonna do full height doors on the back of your islands, but do you have the space for the extra storage? base cabinetry is 24 inches deep with an overhang comfortable enough for a lap that brings you to 3 feet if you’re gonna add Additional storage you’re gonna add in addition to that which is gonna bring you to about 4 feet Which brings us back to point number one. Do you have the space?
