the project TO INSCRIBE IN SAO PAULO
started in 1999 at the time of my first trip to Brazil I visited the subway and they liked my idea very much So they gave me the LUZ station they decided to give me this station because it was located in an interesting
and central neighborhood it made sense with the history of the city mixed with the question of the Human Rights there, in the center, it is very important we created a team with the Azulejaria with Laura Taves, Tatiana Dalla Bona
who is an artist and also with Julio Vilani
who is another Brazilian artist and also with Rita the Human Rights are the key of this work but, in addition to the Human Rights the work tells us the story of
the city of São Paulo this first panel tells us
the birth of São Paulo when the Jesuits arrived each drawing is one article
of the Human Rights they are created by one or
two kids by article the pedagogical method
is divided in two steps INSCRIRE made a pedagogical kit that we give to the teachers who are
using it to give lessons to their students afterwards, our team arrives at the school with the material, to transform
the kids’s designs into ceramic artworks each group of two students has chosen an article and they’ve projected their own
life within this article sometimes they need to make research in the school library or into newspapers they have to imagine situations of life representing the article they’ve already worked 4 months on this theme writing small texts, creating poetry, … to make them participate and understand the Human Rights very close to their own reality and not as a document made in 1948 that seems something from the past which makes no sense what was great with this
work about the Rights is that they learned that their
friends has  Rights too and that they cannot overpass
the friends’ limits the biggest difficulty was
to have them understood that they HAVE Rights… their reactions was: What ? in reality, they didn’t have
any idea of it ! if they have an idea,
it is very far from them now we are a bit closer now the Human Right are not anymore something difficult to understand now it’s already something to practice and for them: it is theirs now! Human Rights belong to people, don’t they? the idea of promoting Human Rights given by the Universal Declaration which is our subject with the Association INSCRIRE the Human Rights has an educational perspective for Human Rights one needs to give birth
to the students’ personality in a free and emancipated way through the artistic representation in a way that makes sense in their own life and not only in a formal text they integrate notions such as ethics and not as a doctrine because a doctrine can easily
be changed for another doctrine and after they have drawn on paper they make it on ceramics with us we help them all when leave the school
we have a beautiful panel made by about 60 pupils when the child paints his ceramics and sees the drawing appear which is his own at that moment we have conquered the child when he develops an idea and when he succeeds in expressing it and knows that it will be there forever in a place where he can go back and see his name where anyone can see it too it is fantastic! Isn’t? it’s a really interesting thinking process that will be in a public place that everybody can see but nobody will be there
to explain these drawings so one needs to make
self explanatory drawings that produce emotions and create an open dialog with the audience when the viewers will understand that it was created by youngsters and kids from various neighborhoods they’ll be interested because
it is a collective action and became a collective thinking process for the subway users who are observerving the drawings article 6 : Everyone has
the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law. article 20 – 1: Everyone has the
right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association. 2. No one may be compelled to belong to an association. Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, article 3: Everyone has the right to life,
liberty and security of person. afterward I help you to draw, ok? before you must tell me
the story of a situation then we can imagine the drawing, ok? so, it doesn’t matter
the color of the pencil because it burns when
it goes into the kiln what you need to know if you make mistakes is that you can always
clean up the paint with this stick this is the key to ceramics ! It will never go away ? no, it will be there for ever ! what they adore the most is that it will be exhibited
in a public place and in a few years,
they will pass by and say It’s me who did this, I did this ! I heard it many times at the opening of the first panel
that they attend the other part of the project is historical in which the kids are not involved it is only us working : artists,
philosophers, researchers various people who enter into the game… the station is divided into 16 sections representing 16 fragments of the history of Sao Paulo each panel is about one theme it starts before 1500 with the Indians then Porto Santos, Sao Vincente then it goes to the foundation of Sao Paulo in 1554 then the time of the goldmines,
the one of the coffee the time of the Old Estate the immigration from Italy,
the one from the North the Modern Art week we also work on the dictatorship and from the democratization up to today there are 16 panels we also have a specific methodology sometimes I ask other people to read for me then together, with Tatiana and Laura we meet and discuss very precisely about what will be visually integrated into each panel So, at the end the station will become a History Book the people will walk along the station and understand the history of Sao Paulo the history of Brazil what interest me in this project is the urban impact of the project the discussion that under
holds this collective action the project that we propose
links art with education and the revitalization of urban space The best of all is : working with people who interfere within the city it is a exchange of ideas a way to interact. Isn’t ? we teach and learn at the same time. Isn’t ? we believe in this exchange and this project is doing it the director of the school supports it the direction of the CEU supports it the parents know about it everyone understands that
the community is participating about the panels of the LUZ station it ‘s going to be very interesting this construction of a Human Rights’ Culture which will remain in time for the population that passes there today and in the future, they will be able to communicate with the kids’ perceptions of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights and build their own concepts about it.
