How To Hang Exterior Christmas Lights
How To Hang Exterior Christmas Lights

It’s that time of year. The food, the presents,
the mistletoe and this year, you’re determined to have the best Christmas lights on the block.
Here are some easy tricks to get the house looking merry and bright. Before you even start, it’s best to take a
step back and develop an overall game plan. Start by identifying a focal point for the
lights. Next, measure any straight line you want to adorn with lights. This will help
you figure out how many strands you’ll need. Also measure the distance to the power source.
The last thing you want is beautiful light display and no way to turn it on. If you want your house to be seen from space,
you’ll need to stagger two sets of lights side-by-side, or look for lights that are
spaced closer together. Denser lights, equal brighter lights. For mounting, forget your previous methods
involving staples, clothespins, and duct tape. This year, light clips are your new best friends
Lowe’s has a light clip for every surface Now for the big question: how many lights
can you string together? Turns out, most LEDs can connect up to 25 strands, whereas incandescent
lights may only be able to connect 3 to 6. Believe it or not white lights are not all
the same color. LED lights typically have a bluish tint, whereas incandescent bulbs
are slightly orange. Hang them side-by-side and they will look mismatched. There are tons
of different light types and colors. Just make sure to group the same light-type together. So now that the prep is done, its time to
test your lights. Do this on the ground, since the last place you want to find out your lights
aren’t working is on top of a ladder in the cold. Go ahead and attach the light clips
at this point and make sure they’re the lights are all running in the same direction. Now you need to work from the ground up: Bushes: Try using net lights. They are like
a blanket of lights. Simply lay them on the bushes and you’re done. Trees: When hanging lights in a tree, try
using a hanging pole. They’re also great for hard to reach areas or if you just don’t want
to climb a ladder. Windows, Doors & Railings: Deck Clips easily
roll onto railings to hold lights securely without damage.Step back as you go and make
sure everything is shaping up the way you want it. Attach lights to the gutters, by
using an all-purpose light clip. They can connect to the strand or directly to the bulb.
This would be a perfect place for those icicle lights! Now that the lights are up, plug them into
an outdoor timer to save energy. Some even have light sensors that automatically turn
on at dusk. That’s it! Time to flip the switch and admire your work!

Nice hanging mine tomorrow! Thanks for the tips! I just got new cords and 450 ct strands. How many can you have connected together? (450 ct). I picked up hooks too and electrical tape. Any ideas on how to keep water out of plugins? Wrap them in electrical tape?

I am in the process constructing the Christmas sign. Taken from the creative project ideas "Shine"
The wording on the sign will say'
                                             HO    HO      HO
Which will be installed over the garage door upon completion.
Many thanks Lowe's Home Improvement for the creative ideas.

Is there a product for attaching the small LED lights neatly and all facing the road for best effect, like a straight bar or plastic rod with clips for each light? Alot of my lights don't face the road when I run them from foof to ground at each corner.

I want to decorate my place this year – not just the trees and bushes BUT I have a cement roof with no gutter or roofing material to hang clips from. There is an existing nail so I know it can be done. What kind of nails do I use and can I use an ordinary hammer? What are the tips to prevent making unsightly holes in the cement?

  28. Jazz This says:

Unbelievably I am starting preparations on this year's christmas display. Takes a long time to choreograph 120 strands of lights to music lol. Just as a tip to anyone buying their lights from Lowe's the GE energy smart line of products is definitely some of the best stuff Lowe's carries. They are full wave rectified which basically means they won't flicker. My house has a rather thick application of stucco everywhere so what I'm doing is building PVC frames to fit around the windows and arches and using zip ties to fasten the lights. This is a great video but don't rule out building custom frames for your lights if your house is made of concrete or some other difficult material as set up time is greatly reduced that way.

  49. jalila love says:

Anyone try the Clark Grizwold method and use a staple gun on the roof and trim for the lights? If yes, does it mess up your roof or make wood rot?

  50. Matthew Ford says:

I use 1×2 inch strips of wood with large holes at each end to slide over a nail or screw that's permanently left in the house and painted to hide it. Attach the lights to those so they're all pointing the same direction (to look professional). It's so much easier to put a whole bunch up at once, rather than attaching each light onto the gutters one at a time. Also easier to store them by keeping them on the wooden strips, rather than having to untangle a big ball of wires every year.
