I’m a Mormon, I Clean Carpets, and I Cook Curry

Bye, love you. OK, off we go. Here I come to save the day. This is the fun bit,
pumping up the sprayer. My name is Mike Turvey,
and I clean carpets. Hard work is important
because I work for long hours. Lugging things around
can be awkward. Got to be careful, because I’ve
seen a chiropractor a few times. The work is draining. What motivates me
is the desire to support my family. I’ve had times when I thought
I couldn’t do it anymore. I get on my knees and say, “God, if I can’t get out of this,
please help me enjoy it.” And then I do. God makes even mundane things seem interesting, important,
and exciting. It’s such a fantastic
thing to have. It makes me feel
really good inside. I love being a dad because I see
life again through my kids’ eyes. This is my lovely daughter Jasmine. She’s the best daughter
I’ve got. I’m your only daughter. I respect my fantastic wife, Sarah,
for all she does. It’s a challenge to
synchronize a diary. I’ve tried it. She answers the phone,
“Good afternoon, Star Service.” She’s brilliant. I like to cycle on the canal
with Ben. He’s very good at the piano. Mike’s curry is the best
in the universe. My curry’s really good. I get a load of onions, garlic,
peppers, stick it in the blender, whizz it all up, fry it
in coconut oil. Makes my mouth water
thinking about it. Put some ginger in there. Fantastic, wonderful. Thanks, Ben. I grew up in a good Christian home, but I strayed away from the
things they taught me. I became unhappy. Thankfully, a good friend of mine,
Ricky, suggested we go on a trip. We hitchhiked down
to southern Greece. We stayed in Egypt for a few days;
then we got into Israel. I remember being on an old bus
with a lot of soldiers. I could see the Sea of Galilee
glistening in the sun. We were coming
down the hill, and I could almost picture Jesus
walking on the Sea of Galilee. I started thinking,
“This is where Jesus used to live.” I had an amazing experience. I felt like the whole Bible
flew through me in a split second. I was honestly converted
just like that. I had a witness of Jesus Christ
and the Bible. I was looking for the truth. I asked God if He could guide me
and lead me, and He did. He led me to The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You have challenges,
but it’s a wonderful way of life. Nothing compares with it. I’ve heard that people don’t care how much you know
until they know how much you care. I’ve hung onto that
because we all have the same God. We’re all His children, which
makes us all brothers and sisters. The most important
thing is love. I’m a curry-cooking, carpet-
cleaning husband and father. My name’s Mike Turvey, and I’m a Mormon.

I'm not a Mormon, but I appropriated this story. The majority of jobs aren't sexy, the majority of life isn't "awesome" – but knowing your priorities and finding joy in what you do can only come from something/someone bigger.

This is a man's man. He is my hero. I suppose I cry every time I watch this, it is so cool. Here is a man who wears himself out every day to serve his family and other people. God bless you and your precious family. You are the salt of the earth.

  36. Reinhard Behrens says:

Consider changing your religion dude! For your sake and for your daughter. Jesus is the only way, there is ONLY one God. The Mormon Jesus is not Jesus of the Bible. Have a look at http://www.kanaanministries.org/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2014/02/Prayers-Of-Renunciation-MORMON-CHURCH.pdf or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-xjSJKZbPQ (Jesus is NOT Lucifers brother) I do like your humility and your hard work, it is TRUELY admirable. Go well…

  37. Davey Jones says:

    Mike.
Just wondering if you combined your two loves into one recipe?
I love curry—but not mixed with carpet residue….tho, I have had curry that tasted like a mixture of the two!
