Mosaic Glass Tabletop
Mosaic Glass Tabletop

bjbj This is a circular marble tabletop inlaid
with glass, and it makes a wonderful link between the ancient glass in our collection
and the modern glass. Made in the middle of the 19th century in Italy, this highly decorated
tabletop incorporates two thousand carefully prepared fragments of ancient Roman glass.
Almost all the triangular pieces of glass you see are arrayed in a marvelous sunburst
at the center of the tabletop. Almost all of those are pieces of ancient glass found
by chance in cities like Rome, when areas were redeveloped, carefully cleaned up, in
many cases heated until they were soft so that they could be flattened, and then carefully
cut into the triangular shapes you see, in order to create the elaborate pattern. So
here, in a 19th century table, you have almost got an entire study collection of ancient
Roman glass. h.”6 h.”6 urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags country-region urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags
