Museum and Study Collection: Joyce Clissold, Textile Designer and Printmaker

The remit of our museum is to collect
the work of past students and teachers and Joyce Clissold was a past student
and teacher, she studied at Central School in the 1920s she taught
at Central School in the 1950s and so she fits perfectly and when she died in
1982 her the people who inherited her studio decided to deposit the majority
of her archive with us it includes blocks it includes all the commercial
material it includes a few sketchbooks and it
includes some garments and fabrics the Todai books are rarely represent that
the colors that she used for the printing and the dyeing because she had
other people to do that and the colors have to be have some sort of consistency
you get all the recipes in the book that that that she that’s they use and so the
ladies from Brentford would go in and and look up the recipes and the
interesting thing about the dye books the first one is so full of of dye that
you can barely read the text and so they obviously started and a second one and
so this one is much cleaner so this is very typical of her quite fun prints
when you look at her prints they’re not as carefully placed perhaps as some of
the the more professional more commercial companies did but I think
that was the part of the charm that it was looked handmade it was meant to be
some moveable not matching exactly you
