We Portuguese always think that tiles have
to be square. This is a consequence of a long tradition and those who are far from this
tradition are freer to think about architectural uses of ceramics in different ways. This is
the case of the American Betty Woodman, who created this piece. Naturally,
without the referents, or at least by understanding these referents in a completely different
way, in a much freer way, in a way that is much more independent of her own culture,
ceramics for architecture can be considered in a different way that is not based around
the square tile. And we can reflect in different, innovative ways that ceramics can be used
for architecture, making us think, through this work by Betty Woodman, that architectural
uses of ceramics have a future.
