In the upcoming weeks I will travel across the country visiting multiple universities and schools. I will be interviewing students, alumni and teachers about studying Psychology. I will give you more information about studying Psychology and how to become a psychologist. So do you want to become a psychologist just like me? Stay tuned! Today I am visiting the University of Groningen. 550 students from over 40 different countries start studying here every year. Let’s have a look! This is Daisy. She started studying Psychology in 2015. What do you like best about studying Psychology? I loved that Psychology is so much more than just Clinical Psychology. Where you give clients treatment. What I really liked is that I was also able to teach while being a student. I did not know this beforehand. In my third year I got to do this a lot. I loved this and I found out that I want to continue doing this. I can imagine that you also had some struggles. Can you tell me a little bit more about these struggles? For me crossing over from high school to university was a little bit difficult. The course itself I did not find that difficult. But what was hard for me is that I have to read a lot. Planning to get all this reading done in time for exams can be quite challenging. So I wouldn’t say studying Psychology is very difficult, but it is a lot of work. Are there other things that you would have wanted to know about studying Psychology beforehand. Can you give some advice to future students? Don’t doubt yourself and go for it! This is Selma. She graduated as a Psychologist in 2014. What job do you have now? I now work as a digital marketing coordinator at the University of Groningen This means I am in charge of recruiting new students. I recruit these students from all over the world to come and study here. I mosty recruit them online via websites, social media and newsletters. How did your eduction prepare for the job you do now? Several things actually… It taught me how to influence other peoples’ behaviour. I want people to come and study here. I use a lot of what I learned about that in my job now. I also did a minor in Marketing. I learned a lot about marketing there. I got to see the connection between marketing and psychology. One of the most important things I learned about was statistics. I use statistics daily. I use data to make the marketing I do more efficient. If you could give advice to future or current Psychology students. What would it be? It’s also important to focus on what you can do to evolve next to studying. You can do this by having hobbies and side jobs. Even the most ridiculous jobs can teach you a lot. Wow, this exam looks really difficult. Just kidding! This is Ruud. He is a teacher at the University of Groningen. Can you explain what future students can expect when studying Psychology here? They will get great training in doing scientific research in the field of Psychology. They also get strong preparation for doing field work. What makes Groningen special is that we have expertise in a lot of fields. What are the requirements someone would have to meet if they wanted to study Psychology here? (Find more information about the requirements for international students at https://www.rug.nl/bachelors) What can students do to prepare themselves for studying Psychology? When you are in high school you can pick Psychology related topics for projects. We also have a blog here. (Link in description) It’s called Mindwise Groningen. Students and teachers write blogposts here in English. These posts are about varying psychological topics. You can already check these out. They are really good! We also have something that is called “Student for just one day”. You will join first year students whilst they go to classes. You will get a tour of the campus. You can also ask them a lot of questions about studying Psychology. They also have a lot of information about Groningen and all the fun things you can do here. When you start studying here you will also be asked to participate in scientific research. You can both be the scientist and the subject in these studies. One of the examples is this study about traffic safety. I have already said a little bit about it. Not just students from Holland study Psychology here. Annually 400 international students start their education in Groningen. This is Marco Burelli from Italy. If you have questions about studying Psychology (here) you can leave them in the comments. I always read and answer the questions that are posted here. Did you like this video? Don’t forget to push the “Thumbs up” button. Would you like to see more of my videos? Make sure to subscribe.
