When Furniture Polish Goes Bad – Do You Use More?
When Furniture Polish Goes Bad – Do You Use More?

What do you do when furniture polish goes
bad? By going bad, I mean the sun hits the furniture
a certain way. It discolors a little bit. There are fingerprints and smudges after you’ve
used it. What do you do when furniture polish goes
bad. We’ll talk about that today. Hi there. I’m Angela Brown and this is Ask a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house
cleaning question and I get to help you find an answer. Now, today’s show is brought to us by Housecall
Pro, which is the number one service software for service providers and so if you are a
house cleaning business owner, there are lots of things that can go bad. Furniture polish is at the bottom of the list,
but the things we want to fix today are customer relations. These are the contacts that you have with
your customer and the follow-up and the invoicing and the billing and the collecting and all
the details and the upsells and all this stuff that you run your business. Instead of you trying to keep track and having
a bunch of post it notes and trying to remember in your head what you were supposed to do
on a certain day. It all follows you around on an app that’s
on your phone. It’s so seamless. Check it out at HousecallPro.com/Angela They’ve put together a demo where they can
walk you through to see if it’s right for your business. There’s no obligation whatsoever, but there’s
a deal for me and my friends. It’s at HousecallPro.com/Angela All right, on to today’s show, there is a
guest that called into the show and she asks this question, Speaker 2: Hi, I used Pledge on a table and now it has fingerprint marks and smudge
marks and it looks like a brand new table. It’s a dark wood and she says she’s never
cleaned it before. So I was wondering if you had any idea how
to fix the table. Thank you. All right, furniture polish. This is an exciting question. I’ve created a video already on my top 10
furniture polishes and I will link to that in the show notes so that you can see the
different types of surfaces and the different types of polishes that I recommend. The one that you brought up and the one that
we’re going to talk about today is Pledge. All right, now I’m not going to say anything
about Pledge that you did not already say, and this is what you said is that it left
smudges and fingerprints. Right now Pledge, in defense of Pledge, it
has a no wax buildup, so it should not leave fingerprints and smudges. That said, there are different types of surfaces
that you can and cannot use it on. So, it’s good for lots of surfaces. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the companies
that manufacture furniture have created these amazing coatings that go on the tops of wood
so that you don’t need as much furniture polish and there are so many different kinds of chemicals
that are on the market that if you use the wrong kind of chemical on the wrong kind of
surface, it can have an adverse effect. And so, what you want to do is you want to
make sure that you test the furniture polish on an in conspicuous part of the wood and
this would be like a leg or an arm of a chair instead of on the top of the tabletop. And then you may want to leave it for a couple
of days. Then when you come back, and this is where
the customer, it might be the next time you come back to do the cleaning, check that area
and see, “Hey, how did this hold up? Did it leave any smudges? Did it pick up extra dust? What happened to this particular area of the
furniture?” And you want to know that before you just
go painting furniture polish all over the customer’s house. Because what happens is if it does leave smudges
or if it picks up smudges or if more smudges appear, you’re going to have to just use more
furniture polish to cover it back up. But now what I heard you say in this particular
call is that the table had never been cleaned. So I’m assuming it’s a brand new piece of
furniture. And if that’s the case then it probably already
has a finish on the top of it that needs nothing more than just a damp microfiber cloth. Now this is the beauty of new furniture and
wood has been around forever. So you know, wood is wood, it’s not that wood
is new, but the coatings on top of them, in the last 10 or 15 years, are new. So, if you have like an old antique something,
then Pledge polish is going to do an amazing job. And there are lots of other surfaces that
will do an amazing job for. But a damp microfiber cloth, not wet, but
just damp, it’s ringed out completely. So that there’s no excess water. If you just damp over the top of it and you
wipe it down, it’s going to pick up all the dust. It’s going to pick up all the lint, it’s going
to pick up all the fingerprints, all the smudges, and it’s going to look again like a brand
new table. So you probably don’t need any cleaning solutions
at all. I mean, no chemicals whatsoever, no furniture
polish. And that’s the beauty of it. So, what I might recommend is that to clean
it, that you clean it with a damp microfiber cloth and just kind of monitor it and see
how it goes and use and save the furniture polishes for the wood pieces that actually
would be enhanced by that. There are lots of furniture that are older,
some of them are antiques, some of them have been around 30 plus years, and it just brightens
them up and it gives them a whole new life when you use the furniture polish on it. So yes, for some pieces of wood, no for other
pieces of wood. And so you haven’t damaged the customer’s
furniture by putting Pledge on it. Just wipe it off and then monitor it. And if you want to use a furniture polish
for whatever reason, use it on an in conspicuous area first and just test it out. But have the conversation with the customer,
so the customer knows what you’re doing. Because the last thing we want our customers
to be disappointed in our work because we went the extra mile and we used a product
that we thought was going to work that then didn’t. My next idea in passing is that on the back
of any jar, and this is any jar, any container, any cleaning supply, the manufacturer’s number
is on the back. And so if at any time you have questions like,
“What do I do, it left smudges.” You’re welcome to call that number. This is a, “Please call us with your questions”
number. And there is somebody trained for the company
that manufactures the Pledge that can answer your specific questions on why did it do this,
why did it react this way, and what do you recommend as far as fixing it, so we don’t
have the same situation in the future. Alrighty. I hope that helps a little bit. If it does, please pass this onto a friend. If we’ve earned your subscription, please
subscribe and until we meet again, leave the world a cleaner place than when
you found it.

The best use for Pledge is to keep your car tires looking new (really!) Most modern furniture just needs a damp cloth. If you must use a polish, apply it to an applicator to get the most control over how much you apply (thin layer) and to eliminate overspray.
